Dear Me at 165 Longmarket Street is one of those much talked about cafes which I can never get to cause they’re only open Mon – Fri and I work all the way out in the bloody Northern Suburbs.
So when my mom flew to Cape Town for a quick visit, I decided to take some time off to play tour guide and worked this baby into the itinerary…
Now technically I’ve been there once before, about 2 years back, for dinner. They only do dinner’s on Thursdays and it happens in what they call the “White Room” upstairs. It’s a “9 episode dining experience” at R380pp (R610pp with wine pairing) and from what I can remember, it was really really good. BUT the day vibe downstairs I had heard was a totally different experience to the dinner one, and therefore it was something which I still had to check out.
The space is beautiful. I loved the pop of green and all the other quirky details. It gave me a bit of a French sidewalk cafe feel, which I totally loved.
The very impressive thing about their lunch menu (which I understand changes regularly) is that they cater for all of the following dietary needs:
- reduced sugar
That’s quite a feat, don’t you think? You’d be hard pressed to find a dining spot that puts equal amount of thought & planning into their meals.
I opted for a garden juice (R30 – beetroot, fennel & apple) and to eat I went for a starter portion of the cauliflower & Klein Rivier gruyere risotto with caramelized onion & walnuts (R60/R90). My mom just went for a normal fruit juice and then the free-range pork & pigeon terrine with pickled onions, brioche & fig compote (R78).
- Breakfast 7am – 11am (Mondays to Fridays)
- Lunch 12pm – 3pm (Mondays to Fridays)
- Dinner Thursday Only

PS. Also have a look at their pantry when you’re there. There are some yummy treats you can purchase to take home with you… think jams, chutneys, butters, relishes, oils, vinegars, breads, etc.
