The Fleur Du Cap Wine & Salt pairing at Bergkelder

by Karisa

Food & wine pairings are commonplace these days, but I have to say, the all new Fleur Du Cap Wine & Salt pairing at Die Bergkelder Wine Centre in Stellenbosch is a really fun, different take on the pairing scene.

My friends D, Kim and I popped in to check it out last weekend and we had an absolute blast…

Bergkelder is actually the home of Fleur Du Cap wines, just so you know…

While they were doing the setup for our pairing, we had a few minutes to quickly check out their wine museum & wine cellar:

They have some really nice wines available for purchase there…

And then it was time to get down to business – the wine & salt pairing consists of 5 different Fleur Du Cap wines each carefully pared with a salt-infused snack:

From left to right we had: A sauvignon blanc paired with dolmades, a cardonnay paired with a basil pesto, a merlot paired with chicken liver pate, a cabernet sauvignon paired with a cheese & sundried tomato mix and then a noble late harvest paired with some really yummy salted fudge

Here’s a close up of the 5 different salts used to make the 5 salty treats:

You can of course taste these as well…

And then these were the wines we sampled:

It was really incredible how much the saltiness brought out the flavour of the wines.  It was one pairing where I could definitely say I could taste a big difference before & after each snack.

The pairing costs R75 per person and bookings are required, so do give them a shout first:

  • 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays
  • 09:00 to14h00 on Saturdays
  • Closed on Sundays and religious public holidays.

Go on and check it out.  I’m sure you’ll love it just as much as we did.
