So last week I was completely spoilt with a little 2 day getaway which involved me driving one of these:Enjoying copious amounts of GM & Ahrens vintage bubbly: Digging into a 6 course dinner & champers pairing prepared by top chef, Pierre Hendricks from the Le Bon Vivant restaurant in Franschhoek: Cocktail partying with some awesome folks: And finally meeting the incredibly talented singer & Cape Town boy, Jimmy Nevis: His song Heartboxing is still one of my favourites, quite possibly because I’ve done plenty of heartboxing of my own (But hey, that’s what wine is for right? I’m sure there’s a lot of you out there who can relate to this song too). If you haven’t yet seen the video (which featured plenty on MTV btw), check it out:
His new song “Balloon” is pretty great as well, so do yourself a favour and Youtube that one too…
Anyways, as you can imagine, there’s just way too much to tell, so I’m going to split it across a few posts, kicking things off with where we stayed on our first night: The Last Word Franschhoek
Conveniently located on the main road in Franschhoek (but still well hidden so you don’t get any road noise at all), this luxurious boutique hotel is a truly beautiful space designed to feel like a home away from home.
Let me give you a quick tour:
This family run, 5 star graded & World Travel Award finalist (2010 – 2013) property offers 8 large (as as you saw in the pics, they really are large) superior doubles as well as two pool suites. Then there’s the public areas like that gorgeous lounge with fireplace and the solar heated pool (which of course we didn’t make use of thanks to the freezing weather, but will surely we a great place to chill out in summer).
The hotel also offers secure off-street parking, complimentary WiFi throughout the property, a residents bar, laundry services, 24 hr security, as well as spa treatments, picnic baskets & tours/transfers by arrangement.
Your stay includes a full breakfast as well as all beverages including wine & premium spirits from their bar and then for the rest, whatever you need, just ask. Their goal is to offer a completely personalised experience within a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that’ll leave you feeling totally as ease at all times.
Now they don’t normally do lunch/dinner there (that 6 course dinner was a special arrangement for us media folks), but that’s because you have some of SA’s top restaurants & wine estates just down the road. Like Reuben’s & The Tasting Room (just 5min away & you can simply walk there) as well as Haute Cabriere, La Motte and L’Ormarins (only 5 min by car).
They do however make a really tasty breakfast, and their eggs benedict is a must:I really loved my stay here and I left there feeling like a million dollars, so next time you (or someone you know) feel like a winelands break, do keep The Last Word Franschhoek in mind.
