Some noteworthy events & specials over at The Odyssey Gastropub in Bree St

Two weeks ago I joined a group of fellow foodies at The Odyssey Gastropub in Bree St to sample some of their “nibbles” and learn about some cool events/specials they’re running at the moment.

For those who haven’t yet been to The Odyssey, it’s a very cool two-story space towards the top of Bree St.

Their vibe is all about quality food in a relaxed, bar setting, complimented by live music and general awesomeness.

I hadn’t been in ages… In fact I hadn’t been in years…  Mainly because the last time I was there it was a bit of a scarring experience, not because of the food or the place, purely thanks to the not-so-great company (but that’s a story I can only tell over a bottle or three of wine).

So with that in mind I figured this was a great opportunity to revisit a “golden oldie”.

We were given free reign over the cocktail menu and then we dug into a selection of snacky things from their menu.

The menu is broken down into “Nibbles” (or tapas if you wish) that range from R40 to R80.  Then they also do sharing boards, bar snacks, salads, burgers, and some classic dishes like fish & chips, risotto and sirloin steak.

On the drinks side they do various craft beers on tap, a selection of other beers & ciders, cocktails, and a solid selection of bubbly & wine.

Have a look at their latest food menu over here & their latest drinks menu over here.

So pretty inside…

To drink I had the Elderflower Collins (R67 – Inverroche verdant, elderflower cordial, cucumber & tonic).  It’s basically a gin & tonic salad – which is totally guilt free. 😉

Then food wise we tried the zucchini fries, the chilli poppers, the Odyssey sliders, the baked camembert, and the mushroom & polenta bites.

And then we finished things off with some sweet treats:

Mmmmmmmm…

I really enjoyed everything apart from the chilli poppers – found them a bit hard and over-fried. (Nothing beats the chilli poppers from Pancho’s in Obz in my book btw – I definitely need to go back and get my fix)

But everything else was delicious and as I sat there with this group of awesome folks, just chatting away, I thought – yeah, this is exactly the vibe the Odyssey team aims for.  Chilled & social all the way…  Actually makes for a great birthday dinner & drinks venue…

So now let’s talk specials: On Mondays (ALL DAY) – you can get 2 burgers (chicken, beef or veg) with their signature rosemary fries for only R100.

Yup, two of these babies for only R100…

Then:

  • Wednesday Nights: There’s live music @ 8pm (with a different local artist every week – follow their FB page to find out who’s playing)
  • Thursday Nights: There’s a live DJ & R15 Tequila shots
  • And then during European Football Matches: If you come dressed in your kit, they’ll upsize your craft draft for free!

Sound cool?  Then do pay them a visit…

For reservations you can contact them on 021 422 4084 or bridget@theodyssey.co.za, and they’re open Mon – Fri 12pm ’til late and Saturdays 4pm ’til late.
