I try out the Kyoto Garden Sushi 2017 Winter Special Menu

by Karisa

If you fancy yourself a bit of a Japanese cuisine “connoisseur”, Kyoto Garden Sushi is simply one of those cult restaurants that you have to visit…

If you missed my full Kyoto Garden Sushi review from a while back , you can check it out over here.

It’s a gorgeous little spot in the heart of Gardens, close to where the old Rafiki’s used to be.  I’ve always been a fan of the decor, particularly their sushi bar, and just as a random side mention – their bathrooms are so nice, it makes you feel like you’re at a spa.

Let me give you a quick tour:

Price wise, Kyoto is not going to be for everyone, but the quality of their seafood really is like no other. The awesome thing, however, is that they do run a great winter special every year which makes it a bit more accessible.

The Winter Special Menu consists of 3 courses (with 2 options for each course) and a glass of wine at R220 pp:

My friend Kim and I decided to order one of each item so we could share & get a taste of everything…

Cheers to friends who are willing to share!!

First up we had the tuna tartare:

A nice, light option to start… If like us, you like things on the saltier side, just ask them for some soy on the side…

Next up was the vegetable tempura:

Loved this dish, especially all the dippy things on the side…

We then moved onto mains, starting with the rice with special fish:

I’m not normally a rice & fish person, but this was absolutely delicious… The rice has this awesome sticky texture with a slightly spiced flavour and the fish was perfectly cooked… #sogood

Next up was the Udon noodles with duck:

A nice hearty meal. Also really delicious… If you’re sharing, just ask them to split this into two bowls for you (they’re awesome like that).

And then for dessert, we got a scoop of each:

In the back: the cherry blossom ice cream. And in the front: the black sesame seed ice cream.  Both yum! (but my personal favourite is the black sesame seed ice cream – just because it’s so unusual)

After dinner, they even end things off with a refreshing little cup of green tea:

How cute?

But of course you’re welcome to also supplement your meal with other items from the menu.  I always recommend their scallops (any of their scallop dishes – they’re all amazing) and if you’re a whisky lover, you have to try their selection rare Japanese Whiskeys.

All ‘n all, I can confidently say that the Kyoto Winter Special Menu is a great deal & a nice way to introduce yourself to what they’re all about.
