Dance lovers really should not miss Satori – now showing at the Artscape & brought to you by the Cape Town City Ballet

by Karisa

It’s not every day that you get to see 3 incredible ballets for the price of one, but that’s exactly what you’ll be getting when you book your seats for Satori which is currently showing at the Artscape Theatre until 9 November 2019.

I got to experience the Satori magic this past weekend & loved it!

Brought to you by the Cape Town City Ballet, Satori (which means “a sudden enlightenment”) features 3 very different, yet very beautiful ballets:

Concerto Barocco – choreographed by George Balanchine

Interesting back story: George Balanchine was an American ballet choreographer who was one of the most influential of the 20th century. Known as the “father of American ballet” he co-founded the New York City Ballet and remained its Artistic Director for more than 35 years.

I would describe this ballet piece as simple, fluid & enchanting. It wasn’t my favourite out of the 3, but a lovely piece to get the evening going.

Sheeple – choreographed by Michelle Reid (from South Africa)

Loved, loved, loved this piece! It’s dark, it’s intense and it will have you on the edge of your seat throughout. In Sheeple, Michelle takes on the topic of humans following “the pack” like sheep instead of trying to standout through their own individuality. This is in no way a classical ballet & I think that’s exactly what I loved about it most.

Polatiry – choreographed by UK-born, Kenneth Tindall

I really loved this piece too. Not as dark as Sheeple, not as pretty as Concerto Barocco, somewhere perfectly in the middle. This ballet will have you feeling all kinds of emotions you didn’t even know you had. Polatiry is based on the concept that opposites are actually interconnected, so in this way two things that appear to be opposites are actually two inseparable parts of the same thing. It’s in one word: breathtaking.
