I try out Cotton On’s new Rubi makeup range

by Karisa

Before we begin – I just want so state (categorically) that I am not a beauty blogger…  So please don’t expect comments about the molecular structure of these makeup items or detailed graphs on how it compares to other brands.  😉

I’m just a regular girl who likes pretty things and getting dolled up… Therefore when the team from Cotton On dropped of a bag of makeup goodies for me to play with, how could a girl say no?

Now towards the end of last year, you might have noticed the arrival of a new Rubi makeup range in Cotton On stores.  It’s a fun, new range that won’t break the bank, but still gives you lots of on-trend options to try out.

My stash included a nail colours, some lipsticks, a hot pink gloss, roll on perfume, an eyeshadow palette, blush and some make up wipes:

Mysteriously however… the hot pinky/red nail varnish on the right there immediately went missing… I recall a few friends commenting on how pretty the colour was (and yes, it was pretty, very pretty in fact)… so I’m not accusing anyone in particular, but I do have a short list of suspects, and I just wanted to take this opportunity to say: “I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN” But moving on for now…

Let’s take a closer look at these beauties:

I used the remaining two nail varnishes to create a little feature nail mani… I was quite chuffed with myself, I won’t lie… The range has 20 different nail colours to choose from.

Because this is more of a winter palette, I haven’t used this baby yes… But I’m picturing a pretty sexy smoky eye come June/July…

That blush (colour – Coral Gold) gives you the prettiest pink glow with the option of keeping it quite subtle (that’s how I like it), or adding a bit more oomph if needed. And the wipes come in a really conveniently sized pack which means they’re easy to pop into your handbag…

The hot pink gloss is perfect for summer and the roll on perfume has a soft floral fragrance and is yet another easy one to keep in your handbag…

There are 20 lipstick shades to choose from in crème and matte finishes…

From vivid orange, coral and hot pink lip shades…

I’ve seen beauty bloggers do this… so I just did the same in an attempt to look like I knew what I was doing 🙂

The lipsticks felt quite moisurising once applied.  From a long-wearing perspective, I don’t think they’re designed with any specific long-wearing properties, but they seemed to stay put about the same amount of time as any other lipstick.  My only complaint is that the names of the colours aren’t printed on the packaging somewhere for you to reference again… I’m assuming they put it onto the clear wrapping that the lipsticks are wrapped in, but I ripped those off like it was Christmas morning, so didn’t even think to check.

But hey, I did have fun playing around with all the different colours regardless:

Because i’m quite pale, I definitely preferred the brighter pinks and that dark berry colour…  (for example I feel I look a bit washed out with that nude colour top left – that’ll definitely look much nicer on someone with a darker skin).  I’m also wearing the blush in these pics, but because I’m not really a big blush girl, I only used it to add a slight bit of colour.

All ‘n all I think there are some great options in the Rubi makeup range, and I would definitely look at buying one or two items again once my stash runs dry.  Price wise this is what you’re looking at:

  • Rubi Lipgloss – R69
  • Rubi Lipstick- R69
  • Rubi Roll On Perfume – R99
  • Rubi Bronzer – R119
  • Rubi Make Up Wipes – R49
  • Rubi Nail File – R29
  • Rubi Eyeshadow Palette – R119
  • Rubi Blush – R99
  • Rubi Nail Polish – R49

So really not bad at all…

I have to say a big thank you to the guys & girls at Cotton On for this amazing treat.  And then do keep an eye out for the Rubi range next time you’re in store.
