Varenka has exhibited extensively in both South Africa and in Europe, and back in 2003 she had the great honour of tutoring Nelson Mandela in art lessons, assisting him in producing the Robben Island series.
She currently lives & works between Antwerp and Cape Town, and this will be her first exhibition in 3 years.
The exhibition, HUNGRY MONEY DEPLETING LIFE, opens tomorrow (Saturday, 7 March 2015) and will run until 31 March 2015.
Here’s a bit of info to give you an idea of what the exhibition is all about:
If you’re interested in checking it out, here’s a summary of the need-to-knows:Through the eyes of the next generation the artist explores the follies of adult existence. The works depict scenarios of human behaviour to overcome the stresses of the modern world, we see warning signs to our over exaggerated caution, mindlessness, lack of tenacity and empathy to all that surrounds us.
This passionate commentary on today’s naive society is captured in truly beautiful aesthetics. Varenka produces powerful, straightforward depictions in her signature use of an unsuspecting mix of mediums. Varenka will be showcasing two dimensional works, oil on fabric on board and to heighten the experience she has completed sculptures to accompany the paintings made from tactile hand carved wood and intense ceramic shapes.
