Bree St has become “the street” in Cape Town, hasn’t it… I feel like every time I blink there’s a cool new spot to check out… One of these new additions (well relatively new – they opened their doors on the 1st of December last year) is Little Saint.
I popped in there for lunch a few weeks ago with my friend D and we ended up having a really lovely time. They have the cutest setup – small alfresco dining area out front, and then a very unique wall of greenery inside, ensuring that you’re still very much connected to nature.
Apparently run by a wife and husband duo with tons of restaurant industry experience under their belts, Little Saint is all about sustainable, grass fed, organic, fresh, free range & locally sourced produce. They certainly don’t use any processed refined sugars, but they do believe in cooking with the best coconut & olive oils and creamy butter. (butter…. mmmmmmm…)
It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely glass of wine under a leavy tree while getting a glimpse of Table Mountain in the background. (and all that while still in the inner city #High5ToThat)
The menu is simple. There’s a few breakfast options, coffee/smooties/juice boxes/craft beers/wine to drink, and then their lunch options consists of items which you can either select to have as a salad or a sandwich. This is all written up on a blackboard which of course means options can change depending on what fresh ingredients are available.
I opted for the herb & tomato chicken (R70) as a salad, and D opted for the triple cooked pork belly (R80) as a sandwich:
Both dishes were enjoyable and you can definitely taste the farm to table freshness. Price wise I felt it was very reasonable, particularly when you consider that a wrap at bloody Kauai now costs up to R75. The only thing that could be a bit challenging for some is that they don’t have too many lunch options, so it could feel a bit limiting. Also I wouldn’t describe these as life changing dishes, rather comforting home-style dishes. Not that there’s anything wrong with that of course.
Other than that, the setting is pretty & the service is friendly, and for all these reasons I’m going to give Little Saint a score of on my Miss K Kiss-o-Meter scale.
