Sometimes things happen where I just have to pinch myself… Like when the awesome team from the Stellenbosch Wine Route contacted me and said I could create my very own #DoStellies bucket list and they’ll make it happen! I mean seriously, how awesome??
We got to planning right away… I already had a few ideas on my list, they provided some additional suggestions and together we came up with the following itinerary:
- Day 1
– Chocolate & wine pairing at Waterford Estate
– Cheese platter & wine tasting at Uva Mira
– Check-in & one night stay at Bonne Esperance Guest House
– Dinner at Makaron Restaurant (at Majeka House) - Day 2
– A lazy breakfast at Bonne Esperance
– Horseriding by Equine Sports Centre (at Wild Clover Farm)
– And finally, a gorgeous picnic at Warwick
On day 1 we also managed to squeeze in the “Duck Parade” at Vergenoegd. My partner-in-crime for the weekend, bestie Leigh, suggested we check it out after experiencing it a few weeks prior… So will be sharing some details about that as well.
But yeah, there’s so much to tell you guys about, I figured it would be easier to break it down into a series of #DoStellies posts, starting with that decadent chocolate & wine pairing at Waterford Estate.
This was my first visit to Waterford and I was completely blown away by how beautiful it is. Just take a look at this:
Gorgeous right?
The weather was a bit chilly on the day, so we opted to sit inside, which ended up being a great choice as we got to cosy up to the sexy fireplace…
Waterford offer various wine tasting experiences: A standard tasting (R55 pp), the chocolate & wine pairing (R60 pp), a combo of these two (R80 pp), a library collection tasting (R165 pp – pre-booking essential), a reserve vintage tasting (R220 pp – pre-booking essential), a Jem tasting (R65 pp – featuring the current vintage of the Waterford Estate Flagship Red) and then also a wine drive (R600 pp) in their safari type Game Viewing Land Rover for a 2 hour trip through the 120ha estate. That all sounded very tempting, but we were definitely there for the chocolate as I had heard rave reviews about it from friends. The chocolate & wine pairing includes 3 wines carefully paired with silky smooth Von Geusau Fine Chocolates.

From left to right you have the Kevin Arnold Shiraz, Waterford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon & Waterford Estate Family Reserve Heatherleigh…

These are carefully paired with a creamy dark chocolate, a salted dark chocolate & then a milk chocolate with a subtle rose taste…
I’d also say pay the R20 extra and do the standard tasting combo as well. Their whites are be-a-u-ti-ful, so you wont’ want to miss out.
Waterford is open:
- Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm
- Saturday 10 am to 5 pm
And you’ll find them here: Blaauwklippen Rd, Helderberg, Stellenbosch
For bookings you can contact them on: +27 (0) 21 880 5300 or info@waterfordestate.co.za
I think I’m gonna have to go back for that wine safari… any activity with wine sounds verrrrry good to me. 😉
