I join the Reverie Social table for an amazing 5 course pairing with Paul Rene MCC

by Karisa

Last weekend I got the opportunity to check out the Reverie Social Table in Obs, and I must say, this was definitely a night for the books…

The Reverie Social table is a concept and space created by Chef Julia Hattingh.  Open from Wednesdays to Saturdays, Julia cooks a 5 course dinner which changes all the time depending on where her mood takes her (& what’s freshly available), and with each dinner she collaborates with a wine estate to bring you the ultimate food & wine pairing experience.

The space consists of one 18-seater table only, hence the “social table” reference.  The idea is that strangers can come together for a delicious meal and by the end of the evening you’ve had some cool conversations with some interesting new people or maybe even made a new friend or two.

Last weekend’s dinner was hosted in collaboration with Paul Rene MCC and therefore the menu was a 5 course champagne-inspired feast.  I was flying solo, which did make me nervous at first, but I seriously had nothing to worry about as Julia and her team are so super welcoming and I got to meet some really lovely people.

Paul Rene MCC creator, Henk, was also at the table to talk us through the range, explaining the Paul Rene MCC process which involves 100% chardonnay grapes and a 3 year journey from planning to no less than 20 months of frementation on the lees.

The result is a beautiful bubbly that comes both in a Brut & Brut Rose option which easily rivals that “real champagne” the French so love to brag about. (I mean seriously, I’ve tasted a couple of SA produced MCCs which really are way better than the so called fancy stuff)

But enough talking, let’s look at some photos, shall we?

The Reverie Social Table is located at 226A Lower Main Road

Loved the quirky yet warm & welcoming feel of the space…

The table is set for a social dining experience like no other (well no other here in Cape Town at least)

We kicked things off with some freshly baked bread which trust me is so good you’ll want to marry it…

We also got to taste the difference between “cloudy” bubbly and the regular sparkly kind…

This was course number one, a kind of mussel soup… After a few spoons of this baby I knew I was in for a real foodie treat…

Our man, Innocence, ensuring that there isn’t a empty glass in the house…

The Paul Rene MCC Brut Rose was equally enjoyable…

Course number two featured some grilled salmon witih a fresh strawberry salad…

Course number tree was a goats cheese tart…

Course number four was grilled duck breast…  A favourite dish of mine…

And then dessert was just the perfect tingling of the senses with the lovely mix of sweet and tart…

As you can see from these photos, this was one hell of a meal.  Beautiful flavours, such attention to detail, and hands down one of the best wine pairings I’ve experienced to date.  You can taste that Julia really takes great care in ensuring that the wine is perfectly complemented by the food she decides to prepare.

For all of these reasons, I’m going to give the Reverie Social Table experience a top score of kiss5 on my Miss K Kiss-o-Meter scale.  Loved the concept, loved the food, loved the bubbly & loved the people.

Just something to note:  The menu is very much a surprise, so if you do have any special dietary requirements, please make mention of this when you make your booking.  That way Julia can ensure that you’re not having to miss out on anything.

The cost is R700 pp, which may seem a bit steep for some, but trust me, the evening is totally worth it.

Other things to note:

  • Dinner always kicks off at 19:30.
  • You can book online using their online reservation service or by contacting them on info@reverie.capetown or
    021 447 3219
    .
  • Follow them on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram to get a peek at what’s coming up next.
  • Reverie is also open during the day for lunch which is served until 2pm, serving up a few plates of the day.
  • Their full address is: 226A Lower Main Road, Observatory

Also a tip from my side:  Try to catch an Uber there.  Trust me, they don’t skimp on the drinks and you’re going to want to take full advantage.

To Julia, Henk and the awesome Reverie team, I have to say a very BIG thank you for such a fun Saturday night.  Hopefully I get to do another one of these soon. 🙂

xxx
