Don’t miss the last 3 weeks of West Side Story!

by Karisa

Last night I finally got so see West Side Story (presented by The Fugard Theatre & currently showing at The Artscape Theatre)… and you know what?  It was everything I had hoped it would be, and more!

The story tells the tale of two rival New York gangs, the Jets & the Sharks, who battle for control of the harsh streets of the upper west side.  Then things get complicated as a member of the Jets falls in love with the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.  As you can imagine, things get messy and the whole thing unfolds into a modern day Romeo & Juliet tale.

What I really loved was that this production gives this musical, which was originally released back in 1961, a completely fresh & modern feel.  With captivating set changes, vibrant costumes & even a moving stage, it will have you sitting on the edge of your seat throughout.  Trust me.

Directed by Matthew Wild (you’ll know him from Rocky Horror Show, Cabaret & Funny Girl) & featuring local talents like Bianca Le Grange, Daniel Mpilo Richards & Lynelle Kenned as well as a very cute American boy, Kevin Hack, as Tony – the boy who falls in love with Maria – this show is definitely a must see.

Bianca Le Grange as Anita

Daniel Mpilo Richards as Bernardo

Kevin Hack as Tony & Lynelle Kenned as Maria

Aaah and the Jets… the baddest boys on the block… with Stephen Jubber as their ringleader, Riff.

If you haven’t yet booked your tickets, what are you waiting for???  There are only (just under) 3 weeks left!

  • When:  until 22 April 2018
  • Where:  The Artscape Theatre Opera House – D F Malan Street, Foreshore, Cape Town
  • Time: 8pm   (duration: 2h 30min – with one interval included)
  • Tickets:  R150 – R470 and available via Computicket over here.

I haven’t yet been to the London’s West End, but I have seen a show on Broadway and I can tell you very honestly that this production is on par (if not better).  It’s most definitely money well spent.
