Societi Bistro celebrates proudly South African ingredients with their Bistros Go Local menu series

by Karisa

This past week I got to visit what I would call a Cape Town classic to try a new proudly South African menu series they’ve been running over the last couple of weeks. The restaurant? Societi Bistro  The menu series?  Bistros Go Local

Over the past few years I had lost touch with this restaurant that I used to enjoy for their delicious risottos & cosy atmosphere, a side effect I guess of constantly being on the lookout for hot, new restaurants.  So it was actually really nice to pay them a visit again.

What made it even nicer was the fact that my friend Leigh and I got to sit down for dinner with Societi Bistro owner, Peter Weetman, who is such a lovely, warm & welcoming person, it felt like we were sitting down for dinner at a friend’s house.  But to me that’s always been the charm of Societi Bistro, not fussy or pretentious, more like a home away from home.

Peter told us that he was very passionate about doing a menu series to celebrate ingredients we as South Africans know and love, paired with some amazing local gins & wine.  He also wanted to create a menu series which could show people the different (and simple) ways in which these ingredients can be used.  The humble hake, as an example, is the base for no less than 4 main dishes across the series, but each with its very own flavour.

We were there to try menu number 4 which featured:

  • Apple & Smoked Snoek Salad R70
    – cream cheese croquettes, rocket, caramelised apple
  • Lemon Geranium Hake R95
    – gooseberry compôte, watercress, rocket
  • Rooibos Ice Cream scoop R24

Apple & Smoked Snoek Salad – my favourite dish out of the 3. Easily could have done a 2nd helping.

On the left: Lemon Geranium Hake – really enjoyed how well the gooseberry compote paired with the fish. On the right: Rooibos Ice Cream – a nice, light way to end of the evening.

Leigh and I really had a lovely evening, and it was nice to see that after all these years they’re definitely still going strong.  I’m going to give the Bistros Go Local experience a solid on my Miss K Kiss-o-Meter scale & recommend that you check it out.

If you act fast, you can still enjoy menu 4 this evening, alternatively the next menu will kick off on Wed, 24 April.  There’s 3 more menus left, with the last one running until Sat, 11 May.

If you’re not feeling the Bistros Go Local vibe, their normal a la carte menu is still available and then they also have a Pronto menu available from 12:00 – 19:00 as well as on Wednesdays & Thursdays until 23:00.  The Pronto menu features light, quick bites with prices ranging from R27 to R55.

For reservations, contact them on: 021 42 42 100. They are situated at 50 Orange Street, Gardens and are open Mondays to Saturdays from 12:00 (with last orders at 23:00).
