Restaurant Feature: Say hello to Bree Street’s new Iron Steak and Bar

by Karisa

Iron Steak and Bar is one of the new kids on the Bree Street block. Having taken over the space where Charango used to be, it’s right in the heart of the trendy CBD food scene.

At the end of October I attended their launch where I got a taste of their signature grass fed, flat iron steak which, get this, you can order for only R100! (AND you get a free ice cream!)

I know right, sounds too good to be true… but it’s not…

Oh hello there Iron Steak and Bar…
Loved the interior. It’s a modern, yet welcoming take on a traditional steakhouse. Also loved their 1920s style bar, great for after-work or weekend drinks.

Part of Iron Steak and Bar’s claim to fame is their extra special Vulcano Gres oven which is all the way from Spain & a first here in Cape Town. I’m told it ensures the most perfectly cooked steak packed with flavour. Of course, the ingredients are even more important than the cooking process. Iron Steak and Bar pride themselves at only serving grass-fed boutique beef that has been rear pastured, is free range, organic & locally sourced.

These gorgeous mini meat cleavers are served with all steak dishes & are have been specially imported from London.

As I mentioned above, I got to try their signature flat iron steak – 200g steak served with their house leaf salad for only R100:

Flat iron steak is cut from the shoulder of the cow and is nicely marbled & full of flavour. Although this is a thin cut of meat (which usually would tend to be tough), when cooked properly, it’s a very tender & juicy cut of meat. I really enjoyed it.

Sides are sold separately, but they’ve got a really nice selection with prices ranging from R29 – R45. Side options include: tempura onion rings, creamy mash & gravy, creamed spinach, smashed oven-roasted potatoes & wagyu beef dripping chips.

Clockwise from top left: creamed spinach, tempura onion rings & chimichurri sauce. All very tasty. I also tried a couple of chips which were good too.

But if flat iron steak isn’t your vibe and you’re wanting to go a different route, they also have a daily specials board where you can try everything from Wagyu & Picanha to grilled seabass and whole baby chicken (depending on availabilty on the day):

Definitely keen to go back to try something from this board…

You can also take a look at their full menu over here – including their extensive cocktail selection.

On the menu you will find a couple of dessert options, BUT when you pay your bill your waiter will hand you a special token which you can redeem for a salted caramel ice cream cone dipped in Valrhona shavings.

The best part? You can either claim it right there & then, or keep it in your pocket and redeem it the next time you’re in the area. #sweet

This was a really fun launch & I wish these guys all the best. Want to check it out for yourself? Then contact them on 021 422 1175 or capetown@ironsteak.co.za to make a booking.

They are open: Monday to Sunday from 11am to 11pm. And you’ll find them at: 114 Bree Street, Cape Town.
