The Village Idiot – the awesome new spot behind my hangover today ;)

by Karisa

I’m sitting here… trying to get some work done while suffering through a bit of a (OK a rather large) hangover… why?  I went to check out the all new The Village Idiot in Loop St last night, and from this first visit it is now clear that I’ll be suffering through many hangovers thanks to this awesome new venue.

Brought to you by the guys behind the ever popular Aces ‘n Spades, you kinda have to expect that this isn’t going to be that quiet spot around the corner where you’re going to enjoy an in depth conversation about pressing world events and such.  This is a space with attitude and lots of it.

A few notable mentions:  They have a wraparound balcony (will be really amazing in summer), they have a fireplace (really amazing for right now), on some evenings you can enjoy a live gig or even a DJ set, the atmosphere is vibey and ready for trouble (the good kind of course), and they have a very interesting beer & wine selection.

On the menu you’ll find some daily specials, snacky things, burgers, a braai board, ribs, peri-peri chicken, sosaties, sides & a few desserts.  Nothing too fancy, but definitely some tasty options there.  The burger I hear is excellent, but last night I only opted for a little samoosa snack (in hindsight – I should’ve lined my stomach with a bit more – but I won’t be making that mistake again).

Oh and then there’s Oskar the ostrich – be sure to read all bout this intriguing mascot when you pay them a visit…

Now let me show you around:

The samoosas were a special (so not a regular menu item), bottom left is the peri-peri chicken with a side serving of pap, and then you can also opt for a portion of fries for R20.

Ooh and then this baby from Bermas Wine was really lovely. Let’s just say we enjoyed it a little too much…

Things you need to know:

  • Address:  32 Loop St
  • They are open:  Tuesday – Friday (15:00 – 02:00) as well as Saturday & Sunday (12:00 – 02:00)
  • And you can call them on: 021 418 1548

I’m sure I’ll see you guys there…
