I try out some tasty tapas over at Vicky Christina’s in Camps Bay

by Karisa

If you’re a regular reader, you may have noticed that I’m quite the tapas lover… I mean why have just one meal when you can try a bunch of tasty things instead?  Makes sense to me.

This is why I certainly did not hesitate when I got an invite to try out Vicky Christina’s, a Spanish tapas bar & grill on the Camps Bay strip.  My friend D who travelled with me for part of my Spain trip back in 2013 made for the perfect tapas eating partner-in-crime.  We know our tapas – mainly because we ate our own body weight of the stuff on that trip…

Now Vicky Christina’s (and I am very much assuming here) is a play on the film Vicky Christina Barcelona, one of my favourite movies featuring a hot, sexy cast including Scarlett Johansson, Javier Bardem & Penélope Cruz.  It also happens to be part of a franchise that also has restaurants over in Johannesburg & Durban.

Of course, there’s no better location than the Camps Bay beachfront baby.  So without even seeing the other restaurants, I’m going to go out of a limb here and say that this must simply be the sexiest one.

But I’ll let you decide for yourself.  Here’s a quick tour:

Of course, it’s also all about the views…

Oh and the boobs…

Yup that’s right boys, wall to wall cleavage… literally…

On the food front, they do have a selection of mains, but tapas really are the Spanish way, so that’s what we decided to stick to.  And what goes beautifully with tapas?  A jug (or three) of Sangria of course!

You can grab one of these babies for only R109…

The tapas selection is quite extensive and prices range from R29 for an oyster shot to R84 for a fillet steak stack – which as I understand really is a full meal in it’s own right:

After a lot of umming and aahing, we decided to go for:

Clockwise from top left: duck samoosas, blue cheese croquettes & conquista riblets

Also the spicy potatoes (up front) and the spicy lemon chicken (right at the back)…

Aaaand… the oyster shot and garlic prawns…

The absolute standouts for me were the garlic prawns and the spicy lemon chicken.  I don’t normally order chicken in a restaurant, but trust me, this is delicious.   I also enjoyed the ribs & the duck samoosas.  I don’t actually eat oysters, but D seemed to enjoy that.  The only two dishes I didn’t really enjoy were the blue cheese croquettes, mainly because it conaints bits of walnut which was a strange texture combo for me personally, and then the potatoes aren’t the way “patatas bravas” are normally served in Spain, so it didn’t quite soothe that particular craving.

Overall though, this was a really lovely dining experience.  You have a front row seat to the sunset, it makes for a beautiful sundowner spot, the service is friendly, the Sangria is good, and the tapas are tasty.  Price wise it’s also a pretty solid option when compared to the other options on the strip which do tend to be quite pricey.

For all these reasons I’m going to give Vicky Christina’s a score of kiss4on the Miss K Kiss-o-Meter scale.

And with summer upon us, may I also suggest that you check out their current craft beer & cocktail hour special:
