Lawn bowls fun with Newbie Bowls

by Karisa

I’ve been wanting to do a mention about this for a while… but kept getting sidetracked… For my birthday back in December, I decided to embrace my “geriatric” status with a game of lawn bowls.  Turns out lawn bowls can be quite a competitive game, and what was supposed to be a bit of a joke at my increasing oldness ended up being one hell of a fun day out with friends.

I booked through a company called Newbie Bowls which operates from the Mowbray Bowling Club, and for only R100 pp, their “Full Monty”  package includes all of the following:

  • All equipment – Bowls, Mats, Jacks etc.
  • A fully organised and managed round robin tournament ending off with super exciting semi-finals
and finals (total playing time 2 to 2.5 hours)
  • Marshals to assist with play and scoring
  • A demonstration of the “flow & go” delivery technique
  • Assistance with prize giving (if you choose to do one)
  • Bar & clubhouse facilities
  • And some background music

Then you can also either opt to bring in food OR you can do what we did and have a kickass braai afterwards.

You can have 12 up to 108 players with the Full Monty package and then they’ll split you up into teams…

Lawn bowl chic…

And how’s that view as a great backdrop…

You can’t bring in your own drinks, but their drinks prices are crazy good (think R20 for a double gin & tonic). They even had a special gin just for me… Old Buck… 😉

It makes for a great birthday party, team build or special event & it’s something I’d definitely be keen to do again.

Bookings are essential though, so if this looks like it could be your vibe (and why wouldn’t it be), contact Tom on:
