Last night I finally went to watch Sweeney Todd which is currently showing at Theatre on the Bay until 9 April…
In short: It’s bloody amazing (see what I did there) & a total must see. Book now!
But for those who prefer a little more detail…
Sweeney Todd features local talents Jonathan Roxmouth (as Sweeney Todd) and Charon Williams-Ros (as Mrs. Lovett) in this delightfully dark and witty musical thriller by Stephen Sondheim.
Who remembers the 2007 film adaptation directed by Tim Burton featuring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter? I loved it…
As far as theatre-circle cred goes, this musical also stacks up on the awards front. It’s won both a Tony Award for Best Musical and an Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
But the story?
Set in 19th century England, it tells the story of Benjamin Barker, (alias Sweeney Todd) who returns to London after 15 years’ transportation on trumped-up charges to take revenge on the judge who banished him.
Things then get a little “murderous” as the barber goes on a killing spree while his new friend, Mrs. Lovett (from the pie shop downstairs) helps him get rid of the bodies in quite a clever way…
Apart from me thinking Jonathan Roxmouth is a total hottie (in the show he gives off some major Bruce Willis vibes, and my inner 80s child just couldn’t resist), the production is top class from beginning to end. I was completely sucked in by the impressive stage changes, the clever lighting, the costumes, the music, and of course the incredible performances by every single cast member.
If like me, you love a bit of the macabre, you will thoroughly enjoy Sweeney Todd.
