If you love a good steak, I’m sure you’ve heard of Carne. It is well-known as the ultimate meat destination and has had a bit of a cult status ever since their first branch opened in Keerom St.
Now weirdly, I’ve never been to the one in Keerom St, but I have checked out their slightly more casual branch in Kloof St. Then they also opened a 3rd branch over in Constantia which was still on my “to do list”.
When my bestie Leigh from Lipgloss Is My Life was invited to do a review of their Constantia branch and asked me to tag along as her date, I figured I was just going to go and enjoy a nice leisurely lunch as a “day off” kinda thing. But it ended up being so damn amazing, I just knew there was no way I wasn’t going to write about it. So here goes…
From the outside Carne Constantia has a farm cottage feel with a very pretty garden out front:
But as you enter you’re absorbed into a world of rich colours, modern detailing and general sexiness (I really really really loved the decor – something you’ll pick up from the amount of photos I took):
Gorgeous right? Loved. Every. Detail…
Now their menu of course does center around quality meats, but it also has a very strong Italian feel. The menu is divided into antipasti (or starter dishes), primi (ravioli, penne, gnocchi), secondi piatti (calves liver, rib eye, chicken breast, hamburger), dalla griglia (mains – all served with your choice of side), sides, sauces and dolci (aka the sweet stuff).
But before you make your choice, they’ll pop by with a selection of their meats to explain each one in careful detail and to help you choose…
For starters I opted for the butternut ravioli with ricotta topped with sage butter and parmesan cheese (R80):
Leigh opted for the trio of beef tartare served with anchovies, salsa verde & Morgenster olive oil and lemon (R85):
And for mains, I went for the seared beef fillet medallions topped with salsa verde, bearnaise and mushroom sauce (R245):
And Leigh went for the 300g beef rib eye (R190):
We shared all the dishes to get a good taste of everything and I must say, this was hands down one of the best meals of the year so far. I mean you know you’ve got a winner when you can’t stop yourself from making audible food-happiness noises with every bite. 😉
The service is also very attentive and friendly, and the setting is warm and relaxed. Oh and they also have a really nice wine selection…
For all these reasons I’m going to give Carne Constantia a top score of on the Miss K Kiss-o-Meter scale. This really was an incredible meal and I may even keep them in mind for my birthday dinner this year OR my next first date (nice way to test the “investment value”… hehe).
So yeah, if you’ve been craving some steak goodness, I highly recommend that you give them a call. To make a reservation, take note of the following details:
