Ash Restaurant launches a sexy new winter menu

by Karisa

Ash Restaurant has been a favourite spot to recommend to Cape Town visitors & locals alike ever since they seriously impressed during a visit in November of last year (if you missed my initial review – you can check it out over here)…

Since then, the butchery has moved out (leaving more seating space), the restaurant has been revamped, and they’ve launched a brand spankin’ new menu for winter.   Due to their previous Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants link, the menu had always been a bit meat heavy, which of course isn’t a bad thing, but it was very cool to see that a wider array of dishes has now made it onto the menu.

Head chef & owner, Ash Heeger, has obviously been having a lot of fun with new food suppliers which is definitely reflected on this new menu…  As my friend Dax‘s partner in crime for the evening (thanks again Dax!), we got to sample an array of dishes that feature on the winter menu…

Now let me take you on a little foodie journey of deliciousness:

BREAD & BUTTER homemade bread, artichoke dip, wild rosemary salt & homemade butter

THE NEST EGG (kinda like a little warm palate cleanser)

RAW LINEFISH cured & smoked angelfish, ponzu dressing, spring onions, pickled ginger, smoked cream cheese & avocado

MUSHROOM TOAST mushroom parfait, garlic buchu charred sourdough, pickled mushrooms & pickled lemon

ROASTED BIRD roasted quail, chestnut cream, ash baked celeriac, roasted onions & quail egg

CHARRED OCTOPUS with romesco sauce

HONEY’D PORK honey brined pork loin & fillet, pear & parsnip, crispy bits & molasses

PINE (a little sweet snack to finish things off)

I really enjoyed everything… especially the linefish, mushroom toast & honey’d pork.  But the winner of the night was without a doubt that brown sugar tart.  It was absolutely heavenly.  You’ve gotta try it, even if you don’t have much of a sweet tooth.

So yeah, love the new look, love the new menu.  But if you’re a little concerned that the meatier options are no longer there, don’t! There’s still a lot of hearty red meat dishes to choose from (have a look at a sample menu over here).  The only sad thing is that they no longer do that amazing burger I loved so much, but the new options have at least made things way more interesting.
