My favourite hairstylist, Gilbert Mofubelu, transformed me from blonde to redhead & I’m loving it!

by Karisa

I seriously can’t even remember my life before meeting my incredible hair stylist, Gilbert Mofubelu.  This man has, time and time again, taken my blah brunette hair & transformed it into balayage amazingness – a colouring/highlighting technique that he’s mastered like no other I’ve come across…

Seriously, I love this man so much!

In between ensuring that I (and his other loyal clients) look good, Gilbert is also the celebrity hair stylist on KykNet’s new hit makeover show, Mooimaak.  Season 2 entries just closed & shooting starts soon.  So do keep an eye out.  The makeovers from season 1 were seriously impressive, and I for one am looking forward to seeing what the new season has in store.

During 2017 Gilbert played around with shades of blonde and very slight copper hues, and then back in October we decided to go quite a bit lighter (if you missed it – you can read my post about my blonde transformation over here).

I will admit, heading into my appointment 2 weeks ago, I wasn’t really planning on any drastic change… Being blonde was fun after all, but somehow we decided, why not be bold and try something completely different…

This was the before:

This was a good 4 months after my last visit, and I was really impressed with how long it lasted. Even right up to a couple of days prior, I was still getting compliments on the colour…

Then as Gilbert and I were chatting away I casually mentioned that I’d always wanted to try red, but that I’d been put off by people saying how “fake” or “harsh” red can look.  Gilbert decided to take on that challenge, doing red in his own balayage style that would still have lots of beautiful dimension to it.

And so the transformation began…

First we had to lift my roots… that pesky brunette hair was starting to creep through again…

Then he carefully started hand-painting the balayage highlights…

That had to set before applying a toner that would then give me my new red hue…

Now I know that sounded like 3 quick & easy steps, but a balayage hair treatment takes time.  In total (including a cut & blowdry), I was there for about 4 hours.  BUT – the end result was totally worth it!  Just look at this:

No flat red colour here folks…

Love how natural it looks & how multi-dimensional it is…

It’s a new, fierier me!

I’ve since been told I look like April O’Neil from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mary Jane from Spider Man, Melisandre from Game of Thrones & Mystique from X-Men (sans the blue skin of course haha)… and you know what… I absolutely freakin’ love it!  I think balayage red is going to be my new signature colour for quite some time. 🙂

Also wanting a change?  Then I highly recommend that you book a session with Gilbert immediately & without any hesitation.  You’ll be in the best hands & will never want another hairstylist again.

Just to give you an idea of pricing:

  • Balayage for short hair will cost from R1600 & from R1800 for long hair
  • A cut is R400
  • A cut & blow-dry is R500
  • And a root tint is R600

You can contact Gilbert at Hair on Kloof:

  • Tel:  021 422 2270/69
  • Email:  2009hair@gmail.com

Like they say:  A change is as good as a holiday, so go on and treat yourself!
