Don’t miss VASLAV, currently showing at The Fugard Theatre until 17 Nov

by Karisa

Last week I paid the gorgeous Fugard Theatre a visit to check out a new run of VASLAV– a 70min, one man show which takes you inside the life and mind of Vaslav Nijinsky, a ballet dancer and choreographer who was widely regarded as the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century…

Also the home of Kinky Boots (another must see), The Fugard Theatre is definitely the most beautiful theatre in Cape Town.

Featuring Godfrey Johnson as Vaslav Nijinsky, this is an intensely captivating piece which although quite serious in nature, will leave you feeling completely wowed. Not only by Vaslav’s life story, but also by Godfrey Johnson’s impeccable performance.

Just to give you a little taste: Expect to see Godfrey Johnson transition, seamlessly I may add, from intense dialogue, to impressive piano playing, to singing & right back into more intense dialogue, all while you’re simply trying to wrap your head around the curious life of Vaslav, the revolutionary dancer who was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia and ended up spending the last 30 years of his live in a mental asylum.

Nominated for three Fleur du Cap Awards back in 2015 for Best Actor in a Musical, Best Performance in a One Person Show & Best Composer, Vaslav is the creation of Godfrey Johnson and director & actress, Lara Bye, based on a text written by the pair in conjunction with writer Karen Jeynes.

But all you really need to know is: it’s a must see!
