Lunch at the award-winning Overture Restaurant

by Karisa

My friends and I were recently casually roaming around the Stellenbosch area when we drove past Hidden Valley Wines and saw the sign for their Overture restaurant.

Luckily one of us was bright enough to go “Wait a minute, isn’t that the restaurant we always see on the Eat Out top 10 list?”

Yes, yes it was… In fact they’ve been on the Eat Out top 10 SA restaurant list for 6 years running now.  They’ve also achieved a 3 star rating in the Rossouw’s Restaurant guide for 4 years running and won an international Trip Advisor certificate of excellence award.

Open since November 2007, Chef Bertus Basson and his team have certainly managed to build up quite a reputation for amazing food…

Now this is definitely the kind of place where an advance reservation is a must, but we were very lucky and excited to snap up a walk-in spot on the day.  (the food gods must have been looking out for us)

First we have to take a moment to appreciate the beautiful setting:

It really doesn’t get much better than that…

Then we can take a look at the beautiful restaurant itself:

The menu is small, seasonal and based on what’s freshly available.  You can check out their current menu over here – A 3 course will cost you R355 pp and a 6 course tasting menu goes for R540.  We opted for the 3 course.

To kick things off, bread for the table is pretty standard right?  Right.  But have you ever seen a spread like this:

Bread & spread heaven… Mmmmm

For our 3 course dishes we seemed to all gravitate to the same things, but here’s a little collage of what we sampled (all so incredibly good):

Clockwise from top left: Starter – Chicken liver parfait, mulled apple, toasted Mosbolletjies, truffle butter; Starter – Beetroot tart, horseradish cream, pickled organic beetroot, cauliflower & parmesan; Sides – Olive oil pomme puree, crisp onion & Broccoli, sesame dressing, ginger; Main – Braised Oak Valley beef feathers, sautéed mushrooms, parsnip puree, gremolata.

And then this dessert deserves it’s own photo spot:

Milk tart soufflé, cinnamon ice cream (allow 20 minutes waiting period)… all I could say was wow… wow wow wow…

This was an incredible dining experience from beginning to end.  The service was flawless, the restaurant is gorgeous and the food, well like I always say when I really love something, I wanted to marry it!  It is a little pricey yes, but you’re getting only the best of the best, and when that’s the case, I really don’t mind paying.

I’m going to give Overture an overall Miss K Kiss-o-Meter top score of:

kiss5
