Do check out Cock & Bull story showing at Theatre on the Bay until 28 May

by Karisa

Last week I popped in at Theatre on the Bay for a new show called: A Cock and bull story

You actually may have heard this title before… The original play was created by British playwrights Richard Zajdlic and Richard Crowe and went on to be a blockbuster hit.

Now the story’s been given a suburban Cape Town twist thanks to the talents of Quentin Krog (director of the film ‘Ballade for a Enkeling’) and South African actor Geon Nel.

The production features two hot young actors – Edwin van der Walt (‘Ballade for a Enkeling’, ‘Hollywood in my Huis’, ‘Die Pro’ and ‘Modder en Bloed’) and Dean John Smith (2014 Fleur du Cap Award winner for Most promising Student), and is directed and designed by Marthinus Basson.

The strory goes a little something like this:

TJ (Dean-John Smith) is a promising young boxer on the eve of a bout that could make or break his career. He is waiting for his friend Jaco (Edwin van der Walt), who always prepares him both mentally and physically for his fights. TJ’s confidence has waned after a recent humiliating defeat against tonight’s opponent – and Jaco is late.

For TJ boxing is not just a passion, it’s an escape from his lower middle-class background and a passport to a better life. Jaco on the other hand has to measure himself against the long shadow cast by his father, a local legend with underworld connections and notoriety as a street fighter.  But tonight is a battle of a different kind. Instead of measuring their strength in the ring TJ and Jaco will test the limits of friendship in the locker room.

It’s fast-paced, gritty and very engaging.  These guys will have you laughing one minute and sitting on the edge of your seat the next.  I loved how the story progressed from just two guys bragging about how tough they are and how they can score any “chick”, to a much deeper narrative of friendship and the challenges that come along with having to deal with personal differences and interdependence.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m sure you will too.  But you better act fast because it’s only running until the 28th of May before they head over to Montecasino in JHB.

Here are all the need-to-knows:

  • Show times:  Tue – Sat @ 8pm | Sat 28 May @ 5pm & 8pm
  • Running Time: 50 min | interval | 40 min
  • Important to note:  The play is bilingual – Afrikaans and English – so you have to be able to “praat die taal” (or at least understand it).  There’s also an age restriction of 16 for language & nudity (only very minor, so don’t get too excited you dirrrrty people – just a small scene where TJ changes into his boxing kit)
  • Tickets:  Prices range from R100 – R180 and can be booked via Theatre on the Bay’s Computicket booking site over here.

Book it, book it now!
