Roast chicken deliciousness over at Roast & Co

by Karisa

Roast & Co is one of the latest “mono menu” style restaurants to hit the Cape Town scene.  The brainchild of the owners of HQ, Roast & Co serves Elgin free range chickens roasted to perfection & served with side dishes reminiscent of a decadent Sunday lunch with family & friends.

Now I know what you’re thinking – chicken, really? What’s so special about that?  Well I used to feel the same…  But trust me, you’re definitely going to want to give this a bash.

I paid them a visit a couple of weeks ago with my friend Werner and we were both seriously impressed.  As far as roast chicken goes, these guys will give even your grandma’s famous roast a run for its money.  Add in a sexy setting and a beautiful courtyard to be enjoyed on warm summer nights and you have yourself a hit.

You’ll find Roast & Co at 98 Shortmarket St, right next door to HQ.  For the interior they’ve gone with exposed face brick, leather seating & multi-colour wooden accents.

Outside in the courtyard you’ll find a lime-green tiled bar which is quite striking, especially when all lit up.  The fairy lights also create a very romantic atmosphere.

But enough talking, let me show you around:

Right, so on the menu you’ll find some sharing items to start along with various sides & salads to accompany your delicious roasted chicken which you can order as a quarter, half or full:

The chicken is prepared either their way or your way… we opted for their way, because they’re the experts, and because you also get to try the following 3 sauces with your chicken anyways:

The fire peri-peri and hickory smoked mayo were my 2 favourites… the lemon & herb will suit people who don’t like too much spice…

For starters we decided to try the Chicken Caesar Croquettes (R58) and the Baked Camembert (R76):

Both were absolutely delicious.  Then as our side choices, we opted for the Roasted Potatoes (R32) and the Pumpkin Fritters (R38):

The potatoes could’ve been slightly crispier, but those pumpkin fritters were incredible.  I don’t think I’ve ever had a pumpkin fritter that was as fluffy as that.   I was also super keen to try the charred corn, but we knew we weren’t going to have enough space… #NextTimeForSure

Then of course the main show – a beautiful full chicken (R210) with crispy skin and soft white meat, served with a herb sauce and lemon on the side:

Perrrrrrrrfection…

By the time we got to dessert we were absolutely stuffed…  But our curiosity got the better of us, so we decided to share the Banana Split vs Cheesecake (R38):

This was such a fun dessert, and not too heavy either… a really nice way to finish off the evening…

Yeah, so as you can see, Roast & Co has ensured that a chicken meal at a restaurant is anything but boring or basic.  I really loved the meal, the setting, the whole Roast & Co experience really, and for that reason I’m going to give them on my Miss K Kiss-o-Meter scale.

To pay them a visit for yourself (and you really should!), give them a call on 021 424 6372 or email them at info@roastandco.co.za.  They are open Monday – Sunday from 12pm to 12am and also have some cool events coming up:
