The Cape Town Carnival is happening this weekend #StreetLife

by Karisa

The Cape Town Carnival is back again on Sat 12 March for it’s annual showcase of creativity & talent featuring giant floats and a huge variety of local performers.

This year’s theme, #StreetLife, aims to highlight how every member of our society, regardless of vocation or background, has a street they can call home – a space where we can all come together to feel connected.

The fan walk, which is of course conveniently lined with bars, restaurants & fast food outlets, will once again be closed off for this extra special event.

The schedule for this year’s carnival is as follows:

  • Fan Walk opens to the public at 3pm
  • Carnival Parade takes place at 7pm
  • Carnival Street Party kicks off at 9:30pm

You’re encouraged to get into the carnival spirit by donning your own, unique carnival mask or outfit, but above all make sure you’re dressed comfortably in easy walking shoes as there will be lots to explore.

If you haven’t yet been and want to get an idea of what to expect, check out my photos from the 2014 Cape Town Carnival over here (my favourite year to date) and the 2015 Cape Town Carnival over here.

There are seated tickets (R290 pp) and VIP tickets (R1300 pp) as options, but general access which is completely FREE is where it’s at.  Just make sure you get there early, grab something to eat at one of the food stands and then settle into a good viewing spot.
